Gasparilla Screening Easy Street Doc
By Douglas Lorah
The Gasparilla Film Festival will be holding a screening of the documentary Easy Street at Channelside Cinemas on August 9th. The evening will begin with a reception with Tampa Bay Media Talk at Splittsville at 5:30pm. Then, everything will move upstairs for a 7:15pm screening. The St Pete filmmakers Andrew Lee and Stephen Ashton will be in attendance.
The event is free for members of the 2007 Gasparilla Film Festival as well as sponsors and volunteers. For public viewing, the admission is $10.
Easy Street is a probing documentary regarding the homeless problems of downtown St. Petersburg. Over the course of one year, Ashton and Lee documented the daily existence of homeless people throughout their hometown. The five subjects they focused on represent a fascinating cross section of the current homeless population of St. Petersburg.
At times both sad and funny, but also shocking and provoking, this gritty documentary puts you face-to-face with the chronically homeless and their daily struggle for survival. From a ride in the back of a pickup truck on the way to a cold night shelter, to squatters camped out in a vacant home for sale, you can experience for yourself what its like.
If you are a member, sponsor or volunteer, please RSVP as soon as possible to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Tampa Film Institute and the Gasparilla Film Festival will be contributing a portion night's proceeds to selected Tampa area homeless services.
There will be a discussion of the film featuring Andrew Lee, and representatives of area homeless services immediately following the screening.
