Documentary screening "People Say I'm Crazy"
On December 2, 2005, the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute and the law firm of de la Parte & Gilbert, P.A. will sponsor the screening of the film documentary "People Say I'm Crazy." The film is the first-ever documentary photographed and directed by someone with schizophrenia.
The film director is John Cadigan. He and his producer sister, Katie Cadigan, spent years filming this personal and moving story that chronicles the ups and downs of John's illness over a decade, and how his family and friends struggle with and support him through each day. The film screening is a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse into the real life experiences of someone with a severe mental illness. The film is emotional and triumphant.
"People Say I'm Crazy" has won many awards and is co-produced by Ira Wohl, an Oscar winning documentary filmmaker (Best Boy 1980). John and Katie Cadigan will be in Tampa for the film screening and will be available to talk with audiences about making the film and John's illness.
Also an accomplished artist, formally trained at Carnegie Mellon University, John creates meticulously detailed woodcuts that are transferred to print. Several pieces of his artwork will be displayed at the Institute for the next few months.
The film screenings are free and open to the public. The films will be screened at the Gibbons Alumni Center at the University of South Florida located at 4202 East Fowler Avenue. The afternoon screening is from 3-4:30 pm and the evening screening is from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Please bring family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Popcorn and soft drinks will be served.
